Welcome to page 2 of our Home Learning!!

Week 10 - Thursday 2nd July

Topic

Today I would like you to do a mini project on the Galapagos Islands.

1. Take a look at the BBC Bitesize lesson and the little videos.

2. Decide what you want to write about...a particular animal...the conservation of the Islands...the geography of the Islands...the exploration and history of the Islands...or something else.

3. Decide how you want to present your information... a powerpoint presentation... a leaflet... a poster...a news reader's report (video)... a documentary (pretend to be David Attenborough or Steve Backshaw, pretend toys or models are real animals, get outside in your garden!)...podcast/radio show...magazine article...a page from an encyclopedia... a piece of descriptive writing about something that you have learnt/seen on a video...YOU CHOOSE!

Literacy

This week I've set you a few tasks that you've needed to apply all your Literacy skills. You've been writing for a particular purpose. Today lets have a grammar and punctuation focus.

Yr 4 - There is a useful lesson about using bullet points today. These are useful when writing facts or information.

BBC Bitesize yr 4 Literacy Using bullet points

Yr 5 - Today's lesson is all about using imperative verbs when writing instructions. Can you remember what an imperative verb is??

You could have a go at writing your own instructions. Maybe how to play your favourite game? How to make something? How to cook something?

Wednesday 1st July

I hope you are all having a good week? This week's focus for our topic is one that I am very passionate about. I grew up living in Selsey, so very close to the beach and spent so much time on the beach and in the water, I spent many years scuba diving and spending time on boats. Our holidays would be spent spending days on the beaches, surfing in Cornwall and Devon. The litter and pollution that gets left on our beaches and in the sea is disgusting.

Over the years I have participated in 'Beach Clean Up's'. There is a 'Great British Beach Clean' that happens in September each year. Also a 'Big Spring Beach Clean' that takes place in April. You don't have to wait until the Beach Clean Up day to help make a difference.

If you fancy something completely different today, take a look at BBC iPlayer on the CBBC channel at 9.25am. Tim Peake is tomorrows 'Celebrity Supply Teacher'. I think its something Science/Space/Rocket related. I think the link is the one you need, if not the just google it!

Topic

Today is another Literacy/Topic linked activity. You are going to pretend you are a newspaper reporter. I would like you to write a newspaper report on the issue of litter/pollution on our beaches and local residents volunteering to do a beach clean up.

Use the Literacy lesson to learn about the key features of a newspaper and plan what you want to write.

You can use the template or make up your own. You can hand write it or type it, there are templates on purple mash.

You can also use these photos for your newspaper article or find some of your own.

Literacy

To help you with your newspaper, I suggest you take a look at the BBC Bitesize lesson and all the other resources I have listed. Use the planning sheet to help you get started.

Remember the 5 W's. Who? What? When? Where? Why?

Remember to write using paragraphs.

Remember to use a quote from someone, maybe a volunteer from the beach clean up. Maybe a local fisherman or someone who works on the sea.

Tuesday 30th June

Topic

Just like yesterday our Topic lesson and Literacy lesson are going to be linked.

To continue with our theme 'Save our Ocean', today I would like you to use the research that you found to write your side of the debate argument to write a persuasive letter to our local MP (Member of Parliament). Our local MP is Andrew Griffith so you  would write...Dear Mr Griffith.

You need to write to him expressing your concern about the amount of pollution and rubbish that ends up on our beaches and in our Oceans. Why is it a problem? Why is it so important? What damage to the environment/wildlife is it causing? What can be done about it? What would you like the Government to do to tackle this problem?

You can send your letter to him and see if he sends you a reply.

Contact information for our local MP - address and email address

Back in October, my daughter Rose wrote a letter to the Queen. She got a reply a few weeks later.

Literacy

When writing a persuasive letter there are certain features and language that you need to consider using.

Watch the powerpoint and look at all the resources below to help you plan and then write your letter.

Monday 29th June

I hope you all had a lovely relaxing weekend. After all the hot, sunny weather last week, I quite enjoyed taking the girls out on their bikes on Saturday in the pouring rain!

We now only have 3 weeks left of the school year. I can't believe it!

We would normally have a visit from someone from one of the local libraries to promote the Summer Reading Challenge. Libraries are currently not open for you to pop into a browse for books but some libraries do operate a 'select and collect' system.

I know that lots of you have been reading loads since we went into lockdown so if you want to participate in the reading challenge you can register online and then hopefully the libraries will open again soon.

Topic

This week our focus for our Oceans topic is Save our OceansWe will be focusing on the environmental problems such as pollution. We touched a little on this when we were learning about turtles the other week.

Today's Literacy lesson and Topic lesson is linked, you will need to have some time to research the topic that will help you to complete the Literacy task.

You are going to be writing a powerful argument to support the idea that, 'Litter should be kept out of our oceans.'

debate is a formal discussion about a subject where people have different views.

Different facts and opinions are presented by each side during the discussion.

The Literacy lesson will explain all the key features for a debate and how to write your side of the argument.

Week 9 - Friday 26th June

Well done again.. another week done! Only 3 more to go!!

If you are anything like me then you definitely need 'Catch up Friday'! With Rose's birthday on Tuesday and the hot weather we haven't managed to achieve much this week. Hopefully with it being a bit cooler today we will be more focused and catch up on a few things from earlier in the week!

Topic

Wasn't yesterday a hot one?! Today is meant to be even hotter!

Yesterday we struggled to do any school work! Rose wasn't really in the mood and it seemed much more fun to play out in the garden and the paddling pool! We'll catch up with things when the weather isn't so hot!

Topic

How did you get on with being a water detective? How much water did your household use yesterday? What used the most water?

Although we filled up the paddling pool in the morning, I did then use the water to water the plants and vegetables in my garden in the evening.

What can you and your family do to try and reduce the amount of water that is used or wasted in your home?

Today's task is to create some mini posters to put up around your house to remind your family how to save water.

Wednesday 24th June

We had a lovely day yesterday for Rose's birthday. We didn't do any school work and spent the day enjoying ourselves.

Don't worry or feel guilty if you have a day of two 'off' from school work, we all need a break sometimes.

The weather for the next few days is due to be even hotter so make sure you stay hydrated (drink lots of water), wear suncream and hats if you are out in the sun and try to stay in the shade between the hottest hours of the day (11am -3pm).

Topic

So...we've looked at the water cycle and rivers. Water is everywhere around us and we can't live without it. It's important that we don't waste what we have. How much water do you use? Have you ever stopped to think about it?

Today I want to you be spies...investigate and record how much water everyone in your family uses. Do they brush their teeth with the tap on or off? How many times does the washing machine go on? Do you have a bath or a shower? How many glasses of water do you drink?

Use the chart below and record your findings in the table. Then use your results to produce a graph. You could always use your ICT skills as produce a graph on Excel.

You've been working so hard and produced some lovely work since half term, I'm really impressed. Lets have an arts and crafty type of lesson. There is so many great ideas on the internet. I'm going to give you the opportunity to choose what you want to do. What materials do you have at home that you could use to make something ocean related? You could use some of your household recycling. If you have material or felt, you could sew something. You could do some origami. You could paint. Make a collage. Make a diorama. Make a model from clay/plasticine. You could do some printing. THE CHOICE IS YOURS.

Just a little reminder...are you all still reading regularly? I do hope so.

What good books have you read since lockdown began? I would love for you to email me and tell me your recommendations.

Topic

To start with, at 11.30 today the National Marine Aquarium, in Devon, is having a live session all about their crabs. The did a really good live session on World Oceans Day about their rock pools.

If your parents have Facebook then ask if you can watch it. It only lasts for 30 minutes. Ask them to type in 'Aquarium Live - connect with our crabs'.

If you can't access Facebook then you can use the link to the Aquarium to see some of the videos that they have already posted.

There are a few Science related lessons to look at. You can choose to do 1 or both.

Food Chains - Look at the lesson and see how you can relate it to what we have been doing this week. Think of an ocean layer, can you create a food chain using the sea creatures that live in that layer?

What creatures are predators? What ones are prey?

BBC Bitesize Science food chains

Adaptation - Look at the lesson. How can you relate what you have learnt this week about the creatures from different layers? Think about the the different depths of the ocean and what its like...what creatures live there? What are their habitats like? How have those creatures had to adapt to live in those habitats?

1. Choose an ocean layer.

2. Think of 3 different creatures that live in that ocean layer and describe their features and how they may have adapted to live and survive.

There is a lesson about Nonsense poems. As said before, poems don't have to rhyme or even make much sense! Its about expressing feelings and ideas using powerful words. Take a look at today's lesson. There is a great video from the amazing Spike Milligan.

BBC Bitesize Literacy Nonsense poems

Once you have looked at this lesson I want you to have a go at writing your own poem. It needs to be linked to our topic, Oceans. I don't mind what you write about, a creature, a day to the beach, the coral reef, sea pollution etc.

Michael Rosen little tips for writing poems - video

You might want to spend a little time reading some poems to help you, give you some ideas. The internet is full of poems.

Remember, it doesn't have to rhyme. Think about the language that you use. Will your poem tell a story?

What type of poem will you write? Different types of poems

Think about your sense when writing your poem. See, hear, smell, feel, taste.

If you are finding it really tricky, take a look at the Haiku help sheet.   Haiku poem worksheet

Don't worry if you don't get it finished today. It takes time to think of the right words to use.

Tuesday 16th June

For the first time in weeks and weeks I was up and out the house by 7.30! I haven't done that since the last day I was in school, it was a bit of a shock! I had my appointment at the hospital. I always love going to the hospital to have a scan to see the baby. This time it was in the right position and the sonographer managed to look at the important things to make sure that the baby is growing as it should be.

Here is a little picture of the baby.

The head is on the right side and it has its hand/arm up by its head. You can see its nose and little lips. I'm not sure what is by its lips!

The body is then on the left side.

Yesterday you learnt about the different layers of the ocean. I would like you to choose one of those layers. Then, research the different creatures that live in that layer. What are the characteristics of that layer and what is the habitat like for those creatures.

Can you find at least 10 different sea creatures that live in your chosen habitat/layer of the ocean? Can you draw/print a photos of them and write a little bit about them.

Topic

This week we will be focusing on the different habitats within the oceans

The best place to start is to look at the different layers of the ocean. Different layers have different characteristics which will then have different habitats.

Take a look at the video, powerpoint and read the information sheets on the different levels.

Literacy

Today in Literacy the focus is Poetry for year 4 and 5. The Yr 4 BBC Bitesize lesson is to write a poem but I think we will save that for another day.

Poems can vary so much. Some rhyme, some done. Some are long, some are short. Some have verses and some don't. But all poems use powerful language expressing feeling and ideas. The language within poems fires up your imagination.

Today, lets looks at some poems. Do you  have a favourite poem? Can you find any poems about that can link to our topic 'Oceans'?

Are there any poems about sea creatures? Saving the Ocean?

Task 1) Look at the BBC Bitesize poetry lesson - click the link below.

Task 2) Find a poem - it can be your favourite on or a new one that you have found.

Task 3) Write it out nicely (beautiful, neat handwriting please) and illustrate it.

Task 4) Try to learn your poem off by heart and perform it to your family.

Task 5) ***This is optional*** You could video it and send it to me.

Week 7 - Friday 12th June

Yay! It's Friday again!! Well done for another great week of home schooling!

I spent the morning at the hospital yesterday, I had an appointment to have a scan to check that the baby was ok and growing nicely. I have to go back on Monday as the baby was being naughty and wasn't in the correct position to do all the checks. They needed to be able to see the baby's face but it was doing a headstand facing towards my back! They did manage to measure how long its femur bone was (leg bone). Its quite a bit longer than the average size! I'm very short and Dan is very tall! Dan suggested that the long legs means that it will be a boy!! Who knows!! We will have to wait until October to find out if it will be a boy  or a girl!

Here are some latest pictures of your hard work. I'm loving all the turtles and the effort that you've been putting in. You should all feel very proud of

2) Go outside. Be active. Explore. Exercise.

3) Learn and label the different parts of a turtle. Open up the document and you need to match the name and definition to the different parts of the turtle. I know you are becoming experts in drawing turtles so you could choose to draw one and then label it. Don't forget to write the definitions too.

4) See if you can find the life cycle of a different sea creature. I have found the life cycle of a jellyfish. Its very interesting!

5) Do some more artwork...this time you could try pointillism. You could use, paints, pens, coloured pencils.

Wednesday 10th June

Good morning.

Here are a few pictures of what you've been up to.

I haven't mentioned it for a while but I do hope you are all managing to get some kind of daily exercise. If you don't manage to make it out of the house each day for a walk or bike ride etc then you can always do some form of exercise in your garden, or an exercise session from You Tube. Joe Wicks is still doing his 9am morning workouts. If you can't manage a 9am start you can catch up online at any time of the day.

We are going to stay with the sea turtles for the rest of the week. Your task for the next few days is to create a persuasive poster/leaflet. You will be persuading people to protect the sea turtles.

Today, use your time to research more about sea turtles. Why they are endangered? What are the main problems? What can be done to help them? What measures are already in place to try and help the turtles?

Here are a few websites to get you started:

Good morning and here we are, another week at home.

Today is WORLD OCEAN DAY.

World Ocean Day is celebrated to remind everyone of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. It is a day to celebrate together the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the ocean.

On the website there are loads of different activities throughout the whole day. Have a good look through the activities and decide which ones you fancy doing. Some of them aren't available until the afternoon so you might need to play out your day. Lizzie Daly  is introducing the day with a 30 minute video at 9am.

Week 6 - Friday 5th June

And...its Friday!! Yay!! I hope you have all had a good week.

Make sure you have a relaxing weekend.

Thank you for your lovely emails and great work, you've been working really hard this week. I'm so impressed.

Some of you have sent through some great fact files that you have done on Word. I'm having problems working out how I can display them on the webpage. I'll keep working on it!

Topic

Lets have a catch up day...finish any unfinished work or catch up on something you may have missed.

I know that some of you have enjoyed the art/drawing this week. Maybe use the you tube videos to learn how to draw some other creatures or draw/paint some other sea creature.

If you fancy something else...how about creating a set of sea creature top trumps and then challenge your family to a game. You can use the template below.

Think of what creatures you might use and then what categories you might use. Length, weight, depth it lives at, cuteness factor, scariness factor etc.

Top trump template

Alternatively you could take some time to chill out and watch some Blue Planet or Our Planet. You can watch them on you tube or on Netflix if you have it.
